They will also compete against new hybrids from Ford, Toyota ( TM ) and Honda ( HMC ), which are entering the market now. By the time these cars hit the market, General Motors ( GM , Fortune 500 ) will be in production with the Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car and Ford ( F , Fortune 500 ) will have its own plug-only compact car.

That would put the F3DM well below GM’s $40,000 Chevy Volt and competitive with Honda’s 2010 Insight, expected to have a base price of just under $20,000. BYD aims to bring that price down to about $16,000 through higher production volumes, helped along by U.S. and EU buyers.
