Through the JuiceNet platform, these facilities can be remotely controlled and aggregated for grid balancing purposes relying on unidirectional and bidirectional (vehicle-to-grid, V2G) electricity flows. Enel has installed around 5,000 charging stations in Italy, Spain, Romania, Greece, Chile, Colombia and Argentina.

But to decarbonize Europe’s grid in short order, the renewable requirements are already steep, and removing nuclear energy from the picture makes it even harder to match that curve. In October, Romania adopted a plan to double its nuclear capacity by 2031.

Even more discouragingly, nuclear’s per-unit cost increased 26 percent between 2009 and 2019—while solar and wind power prices plummeted instead. Most of them are demonstration reactors, not linked to the greater grid, but a crucial stepping stone toward it. Rolls-Royce hopes to get the first of its reactors on the grid by 2029.
