We plugged it in five times, and despite an overall route that skewed more to long-distance highway travel than around-town errands, we managed to do 138 miles on grid electricity alone. Plug-in hybrids that never connect to the grid might as well not have a plug at all. Over five days, we put 276 miles on our test Wrangler 4xe.

Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology is a bi-directional electric grid interface that allows a plug-in to take energy from the grid or put it back on the grid. Smart Grid City will use a realtime high-speed two-way communication throughout the distribution grid. Smart meters and substations will be integral.

Caroline Reichert, an RWE spokeswoman, noted that the idea here is to ensure that "a car can be recharged in Italy in exactly the same way as in Denmark, Germany or France." The "normal plug" idea doesnt neccessarily work dude. Once weve consolidated everything to depend on the grid, we can clean up everything by cleaning up the grid.

Also, besides giving you the ability to charge at night when most utility rates are lower, future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology may allow you to sell some of your stored energy back to the utilities. The demands on the grid would require a lot of infrastructure work without some sort of "energy reservoir" in place.

Engineering proptypes enjoy a tax break. Companies can not sell engineering prototypes in which the company got R&D tax breaks in developing the product. When most of America will be reluctant to buy a GM car because the company might go bankrupt how the hell did those in charge think bailing them out was a good idea?
