Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here. That car was the 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line, and I managed to find one in a Denver-area car graveyard recently.

The 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show opens to the public today with a glittering display of green cars taking pride of place. The show, based at the Los Angeles Convention Center will host more than 30 significant world and North American debuts and feature more than 900 vehicles from sports cars and sedans to crossovers and minivans.

Toyota Prius sales dropped 61.5 per cent in April to 8,385 from 21,757 albeit this is in anticipation of the new 2010 Prius.

Ford: Retaining the number two position in the US market, Ford (along with its brands Lincoln and Mercury) reported sales of 155,954 - down 24.3 The Camry and Camry Hybrid were the volume leaders with monthly sales of 31,325 units while the Prius posted May sales of 10,091 units - down 32.8 per cent compared to the previous year.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. We Promote PHEV Conversion Programs: First CalCars in 2004, then a number of aftermarket companies, have converted over 200 cars — at first most were for fleets, but more and more are going to individual owners.
