Hybrid car sales may have slumped as the recession continues to take its toll on the car industry, but Ford has made itself the exception that proves the rule. Despite this, Toyota and Honda still retain the edge in terms of hybrid sales throughout the US.

Having already surpassed the Toyota Prius during its first month of sales in the UK, Honda’s Insight is now ranked as the best selling car among all new vehicle registrations in Japan in April marking the first time a hybrid model has been the top seller during any monthly sales period.

After months of doom and gloom for the auto industry in the USA, there is finally a ray of hope courtesy of hybrid cars. Reported sales of hybrids in the US increased by 5.2 Indeed sales of hybrids have significantly out-performed the total light duty vehicle market, which dropped by 27.7 per cent year on year.

With the Toyota Prius still providing stiff competition, it appears that Honda may be willing to undercut the price of its own Insight Hybrid car as it bids to land a larger share of the green car market.
