The charge stations and installations were paid for with federal stimulus and California Energy Commission grants won by Coulomb. If you are a consumer, and you get a Volt, Smart, or Ford electric car, you probably qualify for a free home charge station. Free Juice Bar explicitly sells charge stations to offer free power.

Bill lives a good 60 miles from San Francisco, so he needs to get some juice to make his trip home after work. A standard 120-volt outlet - Level 1 in EVspeak. Excuse me, but that’s the point: a little money can create dozens of 120-volt outlets. Bill had spotted an unused outlet in the employee only parking lot.

All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord. This will actually be sufficient for many if not most Volt drivers, and quite a few LEAF drivers. An empty Volt pack will take 10 hours to fully recharge; an empty LEAF about 20 hours. They’ve kept my LEAF juiced, after all. Cost of upgrade: under $300.

Unfortunately there are still damn few J-plugs (the new standard for plug-in cars) publicly deployed, despite the expectations created by the federal grants to the EVProject (Ecotality) and ChargePoint America (Coulomb) and ex-Mayor Newsom here in San Francisco. Here's what's going to happen: You get your new LEAF or Volt.

Therefore, until we get quick-charge batteries -- based on new breakthroughs, Ill take a WAG and estimate that we will have real 5-minute quick-charge batteries in perhaps 10 years -- we are likely to get our juice mostly from our home chargers. Vancouvers trolley bus fleet operates at 600 volts and god knows how many amps.
