The 6-speed AT features a high-voltage electric oil pump for improved efficiency. The Sonata PHEV is perfectly capable of handling (legal) Interstate speeds on battery pack alone; however, such operation depletes the battery relatively quickly. Torque output is the same for PHEV and HEV: 205 N·m (151 lb-ft) @ 0-1,1770 rpm.

The plastic skin is good for reducing high speed wind drag, but it also means that airflow to cool the motor and batteries gets blocked. Another corollary of this design is that you cannot use cheaper oil filled shocks, as cavitation problems occur during the horizontal swishing of the liquid. For the end user, this is not ideal.

The EDISON (Electric Vehicles in a Distributed and Integrated Market using Sustainable Energy and Open Networks) research consortium will seek to match power generation from wind turbines on the island of Bornholm, Denmark, with the power consumption of charging plug-in electric cars. The project is partly funded by the government of Denmark.
