DAIHEN has been using WiTricity’s DRIVE 11 wireless charging system as a reference design for its own line of standards-compliant wireless chargers for battery electric and hybrid electric vehicles. DAIHEN recently launched a demonstration with Kansai Electric Power Co.

The two-seater vehicle features a rather large battery, at least by LSV standards. kW on-board charger can recharge the vehicle in under three hours on 240VAC, or under 5 hours on 120VAC. The funny thing here is that I can already tell you what the detractors are going to say: that it’s an overpriced, glorified golf cart.

The California Energy Commission approved a first-in-the-nation energy efficiency standard that will reduce wasted energy by battery chargers commonly used to power cell phones, laptop computers, power tools, and other devices. The Energy Commission began working on these energy efficiency standards in April 2008.

To reach the de facto standard of 48 V nominal (the actual voltage can go up to near 58 V, depending on battery chemistry) you can either wire four 12 V batteries in series, or the appropriate number of bare cells (typically 16 for LFP).

They have their own not inconsequential set of regulations but don’t have to meet higher standards such as highway crash testing ratings, etc. That means that a recharge likely costs you roughly the amount of loose change you’ve got dangling around in the bottom of your pocket.

The Chevy Volt is going to count on an overnight charge from a standard wall outlet. They are either glorified golf cart city cars like this one or they are only for the very wealthy like the Tesla.
