The BMW XM is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system comprising a V8 gasoline engine and electric motor that delivers combined fuel consumption of 1.6 – 1.5 l/100 km [147 – 157 mpg US] in the WLTP cycle; combined electric power consumption of 30.1 – 28.9 The key sales markets will be the USA, China and the Middle East.

Hyper-miler Wayne Gerdes and his colleague Chris Bernius, driving a factory-standard 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid ( earlier post ), aim to set a new record for lowest fuel consumption in a gasoline hybrid car while driving an 8,000-mile route through all 48 adjoining states of the US.

Most of the vehicles debuting at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show were powered by some sort of electricity. Not all were, of course, as there is still plenty of interest around gasoline-propelled cars, SUVs and trucks. Back and better in the USA. A stunning electric drop-top. No on sale date or pricing has been announced.

The battery electric model will have a base MSRP of $41,350, before any federal or state incentives, and before destination and handling fee (currently $925). The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.
