Hyundai Motor Group is conducting various R&D activities to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles during its transition to battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). The collaboration is expected to create synergies leveraging each participant’s expertise.

Kia unveiled three major hybrid offerings at the Chicago Auto Show: the 2017 Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle; the new Optima Hybrid; and the new Optima Plug-in Hybrid. Because the high-voltage battery is both power and energy dense, engineers were able to use the downsized gasoline engine to maximize fuel economy and reduce emissions.

The 87 octane, gasoline-powered 3-cylinder engine has a rough sound upon start and idle, which increased when pushed during hard acceleration. The electrically power-assisted steering made turning in-town easy, but it made open road driving seem at times as if the car was barely connected to the road. Road Test: 2014 Nissan Versa Note.

The Ioniq Hybrid boasts the highest fuel economy in the US (up to 58 mpg) for a non-plug-in vehicle and the Ioniq Electric is the industry’s most efficient EV (136 mpge). Earlier post.)
