The UK’s Guardian reports that sales of new electric cars in the UK plummeted by nearly 90% in 2009 to 55 units, compared with their peak sales of 397 units in 2007. The current model, REVAi, marketed in the UK as G-Wiz i, has a range of up to 80 km and a top speed of 80 km/h. The new lithium-ion powered REVA L-ion, announced in January, goes into production in May and offers improved acceleration, a range of 120 km, six hours standard charge and a one hour fast charge to 90%.

India's Reva was first into the market with the G-Wiz. Limited ranged, lead-acid battery based cars, they have nonetheless proven the demand of even less than perfect electric vehicles. Mitsubishi could be the first with cars for sale if the UK distributor has its way.

Slow, clunky, even potentially “life-threatening” – these are just a handful of the insults that have been thrown the way of electric car maker REVA and particularly its G-Wiz model. Its interior is a significant improvement on the G-Wiz and the back seat comfortably fits two adults.

Going Green, doing business under the brand name “GoinGreen,” has sold more than 1400 G-Wiz electric vehicles, making it Europe’s largest single retailer of electric vehicles and generating annual revenues in excess of $1 million. Its first model, the Tesla Roadster, was the first production car to use lithium-ion batteries and was the first electric vehicle with a range greater than 200miles. Thanks to a $528million Federal loan the company will also begin work on ‘Project NINA’ to design and assemble a second-generation saloon car for sale in 2012.
