Nearly half of the electric vehicles sold last year were the tiny G-Wiz car. The latest model has a top speed of 50mph and a range of 48 miles between charges.Although sales of all new cars fell sharply in 2009 due to the recession, the drop in new registrations for electric cars was around eight times higher.

India's Reva was first into the market with the G-Wiz. Limited ranged, lead-acid battery based cars, they have nonetheless proven the demand of even less than perfect electric vehicles. To facilitate these EVs, Charging stations are being put in place by local councils, making even short range electric cars viable for commuters.

The current model, REVAi, marketed in the UK as G-Wiz i, has a range of up to 80 km and a top speed of 80 km/h. The new lithium-ion powered REVA L-ion, announced in January, goes into production in May and offers improved acceleration, a range of 120 km, six hours standard charge and a one hour fast charge to 90%.
