Unfortunately for the current generation of electric vehicles, many will not be eligible for the grants, the government’s scheme is likely to assist the sales of the next generation of electric cars and hybrids (such as the plug-in hybrids) which by the government’s own confession are not expected to hit the UK roads until 2011.

Having already adjusted its road tax system to penalise the heaviest polluters and introduced congestion charges; the Government created a vehicle scrappage scheme earlier this year meant to help more motorists make green choices while boosting the automotive sector. Now it seems that its efforts have been rewarded.

Volvo believes the principal of hybrid cars being exempt from the charge is outdated. The problem in the case of hybrid cars however, is that their emissions vary widely. Indeed Volvo is not alone in having reason to complain – at the end of 2008, there were 13 non-hybrid cars from other manufacturers emitting less than 105g/km of CO2.
