The US Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded nearly $4 million in grants to help accelerate the adoption of new measurement methods and standards to advance US competitiveness in metals-based additive manufacturing (AM). This application alone reduces petroleum usage by some 20,000 pounds per year, reduces CO 2 emissions by 30,000 pounds per year, and represents a sustainable usage for wheat straw, the waste byproduct of wheat. Seeing this go into production on the Ford Flex is a major accomplishment for the University of Waterloo and the BioCar Initiative.
