The average fuel economy of new light duty vehicles bought in the USA leapt from October 2007 to April 2009 from 20.2mpg to 21.3mpg. During this period the volume of sales slumped sharply, partly linked to the rising unemployment rate though the price of petrol is not seen as a leading influence.

Honda Manufacturing in Indiana has begun production of the 2009 Civic GX, which is the only natural gas vehicle built by a major automaker in the USA. The Civic GX was actually first introduced in 1998 and is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle certified by the EPA - it is around 90 per cent cleaner than the average petrol powered car.
