An increasing number of cogeneration facilities in the oil sands use natural gas to produce heat and electricity for both project operations and for sale to the power grid. It is also used to create steam in upgrading to produce the hydrogen that converts bitumen into synthetic crude oil.

About 200 megawatts of electricity will be put on the power grid. The plant will also produce sulfuric acid, argon, and inert slag as minor products for sale in commercial markets. A combination of recycling, deep-well injection, and evaporation ponds will eliminate the release of process and brine water to surface waters.

Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. Since then a number of companies have emerged to offer conversions for sale to consumers and fleet buyers, and CalCars has worked to support a growing open-source conversion movement.

One of the biggest challenges to the nations power grid "is going to be the introduction of electric vehicles," said Dana Christiansen, associate director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which has partnered with Nissan, TVA and the state of Tennessee to help develop the charging infrastructure to support the vehicles.
