The project will deploy 502 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through 119 public and private fleets throughout the state. Additionally, the campaign has gained more than 8,000 “soft” fleet orders for these vehicles when they are available. Plug-in vehicles would combine today’s new electric-flex fuel (gas and/or biofuels such as ethanol) hybrid technology with a larger battery that could be recharged by plugging it into a standard wall sockets.

Nissan will pre-release its new electric fleet next year, making 1,000 of the all-electric vehicles available in Phoenix. The goal is to have charging stations in owners garages, as well as between Phoenix and Tucson. A recharge station for your garage will cost about $500 to $700 and each charge would cost about $1.

The Plug-In Partners campaign has now surpassed 6,000 fleet orders. Soft” fleet orders are a critical component of the Plug-In Partners goal of demonstrating to automakers that a market exists for flexible fuel plug-in hybrids. As fleet orders increase, city governments around the country also continue to join the coalition.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is building fleet charging stations in Portland and Phoenix. The electricity for recharging has to come from somewhere, which means power plants. While Id been harsh on the need for outside recharge stations in the past, actually an intermediate charge may extend battery life. aren’t there yet.
