UK-based Langford Performance Engineering has integrated a 30 kW Capstone C30 liquid fueled microturbine as a range extender into a series plug-in hybrid version of a Ford S-Max people carrier—a seven-seat crossover vehicle—in the United Kingdom. The Whisper Eco-Logic microturbine extended range electric vehicle.

The XR Extended Range product, using NMC Li-ion cells, allows longer distances between charge events. Moreover, the contract seeks to match and qualify contract users with federal grant and/or stimulus funds. Fast charge configured buses can also be charged in-depot to take advantage of off-peak charging times.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. Extended-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Volt, which GM says will recharge in three hours — offer another route, adding a small gas engine to keep drivers from feeling stranded without access to fuel. The company says its charge spots would have voltage on par with standard household outlets.
