The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

These vehicles are expected to range in price from about $40,000 to more than $100,000. GM calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. It is different from a plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, which runs on both battery power and gasoline. All will qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. Read reviews, get free pricing, and much more.
