Using high-quality certificates of origin, Mercedes-Benz Vans will guarantee that the energy used to charge electric vans will be matched by an equivalent amount of electricity being fed into the grid from renewable energy sources. Taken together, all these thermal management measures could contribute to a significant increase in range.

At present, PHEV technology alone is equipped to improve the current electric grid. The car can refuel during periods of low demand on the grid, and if equipped with a bi-directional charger, can actually replenish the grid with excess energy gleaned from a renewable resource. But its monumentally less pollution , even on the national (half-coal) grid.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements.
