Nevertheless, the show retains its importance for home-grown manufacturers and with Japanese Government incentives centring on low-emission cars it’s no surprise to see this year’s event adopt a green theme. Unlike most hybrid cars it has also been confirmed to have manual transmission as an option.

Well known hybrid models, the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight achieved enviable EuroNCAP results today. Pedestrian protection is an area that has long been underprioritised by carmakers, last year barely 25 per centof the cars tested achieved more than two stars for pedestrian protection.

Volvo believes the principal of hybrid cars being exempt from the charge is outdated. DRIVe with start/stop technology (pictured below) emits a mere 104g/km of CO2 and was recently named as the What Car? Green Car of the Year. Currently, only alternative fuel vehicles are exempt from the London Congestion Charge.
