An increasing number of cogeneration facilities in the oil sands use natural gas to produce heat and electricity for both project operations and for sale to the power grid. It is also used to create steam in upgrading to produce the hydrogen that converts bitumen into synthetic crude oil.

The engines will be installed in certain Toyota-produced vehicles planned for sale in the European market. Next-generation lithium-ion battery power could allow for powering cars with clean energy from solar cells and from wind turbines. The plant will produce power by converting sub-bituminous coal into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas (syngas) and CO 2. The syngas and high-quality steam will be fed to the combined-cycle combustion and steam turbine generator to produce electricity. About 200 megawatts of electricity will be put on the power grid.
