In 2021, the Volkswagen brand delivered more electrified vehicles worldwide than ever before, handing over to customers more than 369,000 electric cars (+73% versus 2020), comprising approximately 106,000 PHEVs (+33%) and 263,000 all-electric vehicles (+97%). 4 topped the BEV charts in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Ireland.

All electrified types contributed to growth as hybrids (HEV) increased their volume by 36%, pure electric (BEV) by 91% and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) by 173%. They made up 77% of total car registrations in Norway, 38% in Sweden and 28% in Finland. SUVs continue to gain traction. This is a market share of 13.3%

EEA said that one reason for the increase in car emissions is the growing share of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The market penetration of electric cars remained slow in 2019. Gasoline cars were the most sold passenger vehicles, constituting 59% of all new registrations (and 63% including hybrid electric vehicles (HEV)).

Against this negative backdrop, electrified vehicles (HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs) were once again the outlier in the industry. February 2020 registrations of HEVs were up 46% to 59,000; PHEVs were up 153% to 28,700; and BEVs were up 92% to 38,700 units year-on-year. Registrations for SUVs fell by 1.7% from last year.
