Groupe Renault is beginning the first large-scale pilot schemes in alternating-current, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging in electric vehicles. The pilot schemes will begin in the Netherlands and Portugal. Vehicle-to-grid charging is a key pillar of the smart electric ecosystems that Groupe Renault has set up.

The governments of the UK and Portugal have offered to extend financial assistance and other support to ensure that Nissan locates the proposed plants within their respective countries. The two plants are scheduled to supply the advanced lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles to be produced by the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

The new rechargeable lithium-ion battery plant to based within Nissan’s established plant on Washington Road will be Nissan’s European Centre of Excellence for Battery Manufacturing. The battery investment makes Nissan Sunderland a good contender for manufacture of the group’s new ‘greener’ electric vehicles.
