In a post on GM’s FastLane blog, Vice Chairman Tom Stephens said that the company will apply plug-in hybrid technology to one of the four core brands remaining after the restructuring: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

University students from The Ohio State University earned top honors at the 2009 finals of the EcoCAR : The NeXt Challenge competition in Toronto, Canada for their design of a Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). The next-generation design predicts a 300% increase in fuel economy over the production 4-cylinder vehicle.

General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. GM will announce final fuel economy estimates, as well as additional vehicle details such as name and pricing, later. V-6 flex-fuel engine.

Currently Saturn sells two hybrid vehicles - the VUE and Aura with GM hybrid system - and was also scheduled to offer a two-mode hybrid Vue with a Vue plug-in two-mode hybrid version scheduled for 2011 to be used in a test fleet with the US Department of Energy.

Their design of an extended range electric vehicle took first place out of 17 universities in the US and Canada that competed in the first milestone of this three-year competition. The next generation design would feature a 300 per cent increase in fuel economy over the production four cylinder model.
