The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. Merc wants the electric smart to perform badly, to have a short range and little power, so that it dosent eat up other products in the lineup. This has nothing to do with real economics and more to do with marketing, which is the black art of herding people into paying more for less. o well I guess they think all yanks hate diesels.

For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. The biggest problem with recharging at home - as already alluded to in the article, is that electric cars are mostly marketed as city vehicles. my idea is that it would work the way propane tanks work now.
