On the other hand, drivers of other vehicles waste considerable time making special trips to refuel their internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles at the liquid fuel station or their battery electric vehicle (BEV) at the rapid recharging station. PHEVLERs are better than BEVs in support of the electric grid.

Air can be turned into a liquid by cooling it to around -196 °C using standard industrial equipment; 700 liters of ambient air becomes about 1 liter of liquid air, which can then be stored in an unpressurised insulated vessel. The main potential applications are in electricity storage, transport and the recovery of waste heat.

Grants of between £2,000 and £5,000 will be available toordinary motorists to encourage them to buy electric or otherultra-low-carbon cars. The grants will not be available until 2011 and the detail of how they will beallocated and which cars will qualify has still to be worked out. Car buyers were less enthusiastic.
