Mild-hybrid vehicles need to recover energy efficiently and at a relatively high power during deceleration events. Thus a compact and cost-effective battery that is capable of high charge and discharge power levels relative to its storage capacity (high C rates) is desirable.

The new engine will achieve high efficiency using the Atkinson Cycle with an 18:1 compression ratio, combined with aggressive engine downsizing. Valve events will also be adjusted with the VVA to trap more air in the cylinders when power is needed. Engine downsizing is a key tool in improving fuel economy.

At the same event, Delphi also revealed a new common rail system for small, one- to four-cylinder diesel engines, including non-automotive applications. Both types of injectors are operated by conventional solenoid technology, which offers a significant cost advantage. Both Multec types of injectors feature best-in-class NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), which is important because it saves the vehicle manufacturer the cost and weight of additional noise reduction materials.
