In case of power outage at home, the DC pins in the charger can send juice back into the house, keeping the lights on. For its part General Motors—the power behind Chevrolet and GMC—is now set to work with San Francisco-based Pacific Gas & Electric to test forthcoming GM electric vehicles as on-demand power sources for homes.

That lets the Hyundai and Kia slurp electrons at up to a 270-kilowatt rate, when plugged into a 350-kW DC charger. Between bitter ambient temperatures and some snafus, that charger was pushing juice at a sharply reduced, roughly 45-kW rate—exactly one-sixth the Hyundai’s maximum 270-kW rate.

AeroVironment had encouraged its engineers to take creative initiative in developing the Impact, but GM tightly managed efforts to translate the idiosyncratic car into a production prototype, which rankled Cocconi and Rippel. Before cofounding AC Propulsion, Alan Cocconi worked on Sunraycer, a solar-powered car for GM.

Nissan and GM have each had their preferred provider for home charge stations in an attempt to streamline the process, but many customers have had complaints about the cost and scheduling. They’ve kept my LEAF juiced, after all. It takes about seven hours to fill a near empty LEAF, ensuring a complete charge overnight.

And since even the speediest DC chargers take roughly 30 minutes to juice up an EV, drivers and passengers have time to kill, including enough time for a bite. The company hasn’t cited exact numbers of how many DC chargers it hopes to open, but 7-Eleven operates about 9,400 stores in the United States, and nearly 600 more in Canada.

When GM installed chargers for the EV1 they used a 50amp 220V circuit that could pump over 6KW into the batteries. You could leave Los Angeles and drive to Baker, stop and have a meal while the car recharges, and have plenty of juice to make it to your hotel in Vegas. Some industrial sites are even set up with 440V 3 phase service.
