IHS Automotive forecasts that the cumulative number of fast-charging stations installed worldwide will expand by a factor of more than 100 times from 2012 to 2020. The length of time it takes to recharge an EV continues to be one of the major stumbling blocks inhibiting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

However, IDTechEx believes that Europe will remain a charging-dominant region with a focus on DC fast charging deployment, and the number of swapping stations will remain small. An electric car with a swappable battery has extra flexibility: it can be recharged at a charging station or the battery swapped out at a battery swapping station.

IDTechEx forecasts that most of the new DC charging installations will be in the 100+ kW power classes. The Nevera’s 120 kWh, liquid-cooled battery uses an 800 V architecture which should be able to recharge from 0 to 80% SoC in 22 minutes, with the car supporting a peak charging power of 500 kW.

One card is all customers need to start the charging process, whether it’s AC or DC, 11 kW or 150 kW. DC charging stations and most AC chargers throughout Europe are included. Since 2010, OUC, a municipally-owned public utility, has installed hundreds of public charging stations, some powered by solar arrays. For instance, in our jurisdiction, to install electric vehicle infrastructure, we don’t have to obtain approval from the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), whereas Duke and Florida Power & Light do.
