NREL started a 12-month in-use technology evaluation comparing in-use fuel economy and maintenance costs of gHEVs and comparative diesel parcel delivery trucks in April 2009. NREL collected and analyzed data for in-use fuel economy and fuel costs, maintenance costs, total operating costs, and vehicle uptime.

The nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is charged when applying the brakes or coasting. Because of this we don’t address issues such as long-term reliability or total cost of ownership. In addition, we are often invited to manufacturer events highlighting new vehicles or technology. Your numbers may differ.

MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery. Because of this we don’t address issues such as long-term reliability or total cost of ownership.

Basic – Four years/50,000 miles Powertrain – Six years/70,000 miles Hybrid – Eight years/100,000 miles Maintenance – One year/10,000 miles Corrosion – Six years/Unlimited Miles Roadside Assistance – Four years/Unlimited mile.

Its like having a second fuel tank that you always use first -- only you fill up at home, from a regular outlet, at an equivalent cost of under $1/gallon. This means the more maintenance-free electrical systems of PHEVs offset the initial higher cost of batteries. You dont have to plug it in.
