Syrah expects the operating costs of the 10ktpy plant to be US$3,149/t, with the ramp up to 40ktpy dropping that to US$2,704/t. It has already begun work on front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the anode material capacity, which it expects to complete in the first quarter of 2021, before beginning detailed design work.

Proceeds from Syrah’s fully underwritten institutional placement and pro rata accelerated non-renounceable entitlement offer completed earlier this year are sufficient to fund fully the remaining US$165 million of estimated installed capital costs of the Vidalia Initial Expansion project.

The DRC’s cost competitiveness comes from its relatively cheap access to land and low engineering, procurement and construction, or EPC, cost compared to the US, Poland and China. This is due to the DRC’s proximity to cathode raw materials and heavy reliance on hydroelectric power plants.
