Singapore is well-positioned for the deployment of EVs due to our relative small size, urban environment, robust electrical grid and IT infrastructure. It will draw up the overall plan of EV test-bedding and evaluation of the environmental and economic benefits, with a view of a potential larger scale adoption of EVs in future.

Electric cars and a smart electric grid have a bright future, according to panelists at a roundtable discussion on the subject that I attended last Friday in Boston. “I Vehicle-to-grid is, I believe, the salvation of the automotive industry in the United States,” declared Marc Spitzer, an agency commissioner who was also on the panel.

A plan is necessary to provide certainty to business and consumers that a future transport system will be affordable, convenient, safe and sustainable. New Zealanders need to understand that the future of transport will look different than it does today. We also don’t need to ‘reinvent the wheel’. Japan has a 2035 deadline.

In the future, utilities will pay you to plug-in your vehicle. Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology is a bi-directional electric grid interface that allows a plug-in to take energy from the grid or put it back on the grid. The current electrical grid is poorly designed for distributed generation of power.

If a driver doesn't have access to a compressor station, they will be able to plug into the electrical grid and use the car's built-in compressor to refill the tank in about 4 hours. Nègre has signed deals to bring its design to 12 more countries, including Germany, Israel and South Africa. The cost of a fill up is approximately $2.00.
