In a talk at the opening plenary of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) conference in Washington, DC, former New York Governor George Pataki called for a 40% market penetration of electric drive vehicles in the US by the end of the decade. Gasoline is too cheap. Incentivize the battery makers.

The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The program includes the installation of 10 alternative fuel refueling sites (two B20, one Electric Recharging, and seven CNG). Total DOE award: $15,000,000.

We now have a sprinkling of promising companies working to get funded to convert gas-guzzlers. That means we’ll be powering some miles with increasingly renewable electricity that isn't made from imported oil. Using existing technology, we can convert many of them into plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

The electric Equinox is about 1,600 pounds heavier than the gasoline version of the same name.
