JERA, the largest power generation company in Japan, responsible for about 30% of Japan’s electricity, and Toyota Motor have built and deployed the first large-capacity “Sweep Energy Storage System”. The project plans to operate grid storage batteries for recharge and discharge operations, connected to the Chubu Electric Power Grid Co.,

They are very early “converted” prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries. This is due to the added weight of a large battery that, once depleted by pure-electric drive, will contribute nothing until it is plugged in and re-charged.

Combining these sales projections with those for PHEVs, FCEVs, LSEVs and fully-electric vehicles, Roskill expects that close to 70% of new passenger sales will have some degree of electrification by 2027. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) such as the Toyota Prius have been an important market for nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

Both hybrid systems have front and rear electric motors with the Max having more power and torque; both run on 87 octane.
