Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) announced it will be working together with Sierra Northern Railway, Gas Technology Institute (GTI), and other technical experts to develop and test a zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell engine for a switcher locomotive. Earlier post.). SoCalGas is committing another $500,000 to advance the research.

The California Energy Commission has awarded GTI and Sierra Northern Railway nearly $4,000,000 to fund the design, integration, and demonstration of a hydrogen fuel cell switching locomotive to support the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstrations in Rail and Marine Applications at Ports (H2RAM) initiative. —Ted Barnes, Director of R&D at GTI.

Why pay $40K for a GM volt… which will look nothing more than a Malibu anyway and only get 40 miles before the gasoline engine kicks in. One thing is for sure; - electric cars bring down the air pollution, but they sure create another waste pollution problem. Many of the first Prius hybrids that were released are still running strong on their NiMH batteries after 100,000+ miles. In most conversions cost is about the same because of needless weight.
