As the world transitions to sustainable transportation through electric vehicles (EVs), some are considering ways to reduce EV battery waste. Volvo is partnering with battery recycler Connected Energy to give EV batteries a second life as battery energy storage systems (BESS), as detailed in a press release on Wednesday.

The carbon footprint of the most common type of battery for EVs is estimated to be 61-106kg of CO2 emissions equivalent per kilowatt hour of battery capacity, according to the latest data compiled and modeled by battery researchers at IVL Sweden.
