Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MM Automobile Schweiz AG and Switzerland’s largest electricity provider Alpiq Holding AG (Alpiq) through which the three parties will work together to promote the popularization of the new-generation electric vehicle i-MiEV in Switzerland.

Concurrent with beginning production of the i MiEV ( earlier post ), Mitsubishi Motors had also outlined its “Mitsubishi Motors Group Environmental Vision 2020” roadmap for its near-future, including a production volume at least 20% of which is electric vehicles. A sport model of the i-MiEV, with better driving performance.

GS Yuasa, the provider of the LEV50 Li-ion cell ( earlier post ) used in the battery pack for the i-MiEV, is developing a 25 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prototype, said Dr. Masanori Kitamura from GS Yuasa’s Corporate Strategic Planning group in a presentation at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference 2009 (AABC).

The DC Fast Charging Station is on display for demonstration at the Business of Plugging In Conference, 12 – 14 October at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The station will be qualified for use with several electric vehicle brands including the Nissan LEAF and the Mitsubishi i MiEV.

I came as a guest for Driving Sustainability , Iceland’s conference for the future of cars. Yet-Ming Chiang from A123 Systems in Cambridge, Bill Dube, from the Killacycle , Sven Thesen and John Proctor from Better Place , the MiEV team from Mitsubishi, and on and on. They lined up an international and terrific schedule.

In the near-term (2011), lithium-ion batteries could grow to represent about 21% of the hybrid and EV advanced battery market, according to Dr. Menahem Anderman, President of Advanced Automotive Batteries and the organizer of last week’s Advanced Automotive Battery Conference 2009.
