Ford is cutting its F-150 Lightning production workforce by two-thirds as the company continues to try and ramp manufacturing of electric vehicles and work toward profitability. The Michigan Assembly plant is getting a third shift as Ford continues to lean on gas vehicle sales to bolster its finances.

The F-150 Lightning was America’s best-selling electric truck in 2023, while the Mustang Mach-E had its best sales year yet. Ford sold a record 25,937 electric vehicles in the last three months of 2023, up 24% over the third quarter. However, these numbers don’t include the Kona electric.

Now we learn that two of the first EVs to be built on the platform will be a small electric pickup and SUV, with starting prices around $25,000. Meanwhile, plans for a huge three-row electric SUV have been shifted to the slow lane. The platform will feature low-cost LFP batteries, and the first model is expected to launch in 2026.
