IEA: Estonia is pioneering technologies for more efficient and cleaner use of oil shale

An article in the latest issue of IEA Energy: The Journal of the International Energy Agency reports that Estonia, which has the most developed oil shale industry in the world, is collaborating in pursuing wider use of oil shale in a cleaner, more sustainable manner. There are also significant reserves in Jordan, Morocco, Sweden, Syria and Turkey.

Used Vehicles and the Environment - A Global Overview of Used Light Duty Vehicles: Flow, Scale and Regulation , the first report of its kind, calls for action to fill the current policy vacuum with the adoption of harmonized minimum quality standards that will ensure used vehicles contribute to cleaner, safer fleets in importing countries. Last month, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) set cleaner fuels and vehicle standards from January 2021.

The findings suggest that developing nations are moving toward cleaner power but not nearly fast enough to limit global CO 2 emissions. Most notably, Vietnam, South Africa, Mexico and Morocco led the rankings with a combined investment of $16 billion in 2018. The transition from coal toward cleaner sources in developing nations is underway.
