Honda built its original reputation around affordable small cars like its Civic. Yet decades on, segueing into an era of EVs, it has no battery-electric equivalent to the Civic. It might take a technology breakthrough, like solid-state battery tech, before Honda sees a small, affordable car as making sense—late in the decade.

General Motors: GM sold a total of 1,708 hybrids during the month – an increase of 4.8 Honda: The company sold a total of 4,943 hybrids during the month with 4,226 of these units being the new Honda Insight. The Civic Hybrid meanwhile sold 717 units, down 77 per cent compared to August 2008.

Meanwhile, the Ford Escape and Mariner hybrids saw sales drop by 40.5 General Motors: The company sold 1,534 units in April which consisted of: 523 two-mode SUVS (Tahoe, Yukon Escalade); 95 two-mode pick-ups (Silverado, Sierra); 547 Malibu hybrids; 338 Saturn VUE hybrids; 31 Saturn Aura hybrids.

Here is how each manufacturer faired: Ford: The company reported a six per cent drop in sales year-on-year. However, it sold 2,138 hybrids in September which is 116 per cent up compared to September 2008 – sales of the Milan/Escape hybrid were down 11.3 per cent, but the new Fusion and Milan hybrid accounted for 1,260 units.
