The BMW Group and Great Wall Motor have launched a new joint venture—Spotlight Automotive Limited—and are building a joint plant in China, where the BMW Group will produce future fully-electric models of its MINI brand. Both partners will together invest around €650 million (more than five billion CNY).

This vehicle will radically alter the motor industry as we know it. The BMW Group has been gathering insights into the day-to-day use of electric vehicles since mid-2009, when it launched a global field test involving more than 600 MINI E models. The project has the backing of both the Chinese and the German governments.

BMW Group and its Chinese joint venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. The plug-in was developed exclusively for the Chinese automobile market and produced at the Shenyang site. The parallel hybrid system consists of a 160 kW (215 hp) BMW TwinPower Turbo engine and an electrical motor with a maximum output of 70 kW.

The second generation of MINI, introduced in 2000, optimized the relationship between fun driving and fuel consumption, including the introduction of diesel engines. In 2008, MINI was a trailblazer for electromobility in the BMW Group. Electrified vehicles now account for 10% of MINI sales.
