Starting in 2016, the Swedish brand has included plug-in hybrid versions of pretty much every new vehicle it sells in the US. . It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery. My quick road test revealed both pros and cons of the XC40 Recharge.

In a pre-response to that speech, having successfully advocated for plug-in hybrids like the forthcoming Chevy Volt, we propose that the President follow that speech up with a “realistic and conservative” roadmap to halve our oil use in 10 years. And oil only seems cheap. Its impacts are increasingly unaffordable.

Currently only two EVs in the US are made in China, the Polestar 2 and Volvo S90 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid. But the excellent Volvo EX30 is set to release this year at a starting price of $35k, which was inclusive of the 25% credit. Most of these tariffs go into effect this year, though some will be imposed next year.

(Last year Oregon had also aggressively negotiated with the Chinese carmaker, BYD , to manufacture its line of plug-in hybrids in the state for sale in the U.S.) Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not.
