Improved battery technology plus access to cheap renewable electricity open the possibility of battery-electric rail. Conversion of the US freight rail sector to battery-electric would generate about 220 gigawatt-hours of mobile storage. An open-access paper on their study appears in the journal Nature Energy.

In general, the sponsor’s goal is to use as much cheap debt financing and as little equity as possible to complete the deal.

At a press event on Monday, Oregon’s governor, Ted Kulongoski, was talking up Nissan’s previously announced partnership with the state. Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not.
