I have seen the future and it is a new car electric car from Nissan. Nissan is about to drink GM’s milkshake with a breakthrough, affordable, next generation electric car that will be beat the Chevy Volt to market, cost half as much and work twice as well. Plus it looks ten times cooler. And by that I mean the end of 2010.

A majority of the EVcentral writing staff acknowledged the compact Chinese battery electric vehicle for one positive reason or another. No new electric vehicle sold in Australia is cheap, but the BYD Atto 3 is definitely among the most affordable. The BYD Atto 3 comes as two models; Standard and Extended range. It’s a decent result.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo at lowest ride height 466km: Genesis GV60 AWD, $110,700 Not cheap, but the Genesis GV60 compact SUV with a motor over each axle and 77.4kWh battery is refined, fast, comfortable and laden down with gear. Not cheap, but a 95kWh battery, 446km range and 150kW DC fast charging are wins.

Alfa Romeo Tonale – the Italian brand finally has a rechargeable car in its ranks in the form of the Tonale PHEV compact SUV. Avatar E11 – a new brand with big dreams, Avatar has input from Huawei and CATL and is the product of Chinese car maker Changan. Expect to see it Down Under in 2023. Think iX3, but smaller.

The Atto 3 is charmingly if idiosyncratically styled, has a decent equipment list, a range between recharges as much as 400km in the real world, acceptable performance from its 150kW e-motor and a comfy if not especially dynamic ride/handling balance. It’s the first ‘affordable’ EV that’s not felt heavily compromised or compromising.

Why hes banking on an obscure Chinese electric car company and a CEO who - no joke - drinks his own battery fluid. The E6 will hit the Chinese market later this year.
