Audi e-Tron GT – the BEV guts of the regular e-Tron (also shared with Porsche’s Taycan) in a coupe-inspired four-door body. Avatar E11 – a new brand with big dreams, Avatar has input from Huawei and CATL and is the product of Chinese car maker Changan. Sleeker Sportback model will also be part of the e-Tron S range.

To continue the earlier theme, I’m looking forward to driving three new Chinese EV entries to the Australian market, all of them potentially offering outstanding value for money. I reckon the Porsche Taycan RWD remains the better EV to drive (despite lacking a bit of shove), but the Hyundai’s the car I’d rather live with.

In my “working” life (people get very angry when I call driving new cars work), there are a very few “this changes everything” moments, but I just had one when testing the alarmingly good, and relatively cheap, MG4. Years ago, I remember driving my first ever EV, a Mitsubishi WhywhywhyMiEV I think it was called, and hating it enormously.

Known as the Lightning Cat overseas, the sleek five-door from Chinese maker GWM is yet to be definitively confirmed for Australia. Bearing some design similarities to the Porsche Panamera, the GWM Ora Sport produces up to 300kW and 680Nm in more expensive dual-motor guise, promising seriously brisk acceleration. It won’t be cheap, but Audi’s e-Tron GT and its more potent RS e-Tron GT sibling promise big performance. Utilising the underpinnings of the Porsche Taycan, the e-Tron GT’s sleek four-door body has head-turning looks on its side. Chinese-owned MG has enjoyed early EV success in Australia with the ZS EV. Audi e-Tron GT quattro.
