Cheap Chinese Connected Cost Of 
Charged EVs

You might not know it to look at them, but these two cars—one Swedish, one Chinese—share underpinnings and a parent company. Volvo and its Chinese parent Geely are very serious about selling cars that plug in. It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery.

The cost of ownership for EVs is still quite high. And they will probably come from China, if we do not start creating a really dutch alternative, cheap, simple, ultra lightweight and modularized. The cost of batteries is not a problem when this is organized in the right way. They will sell like hell when available.

EVs ain’t cheap Price is another EV purchase risk that is comparable to EV range. How long GM will be able to keep that price in the face of battery cost increases and inflationary pressure, is anyone’s guess. Even in the Chinese market where smaller EV sales are booming, profits are not.

Charging using Tesla’s Supercharger network here in Germany was gloriously unremarkable (remember, Tesla uses CCS in the EU) apart from one incident where the Tesla app repeatedly just told me “Lost connection to charger” no matter which pylon I chose. This site also had a number of pylons out of order.

Last year Oregon had also aggressively negotiated with the Chinese carmaker, BYD , to manufacture its line of plug-in hybrids in the state for sale in the U.S.) Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not.
