Monthly new vehicle market share for hybrids. Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% year-on-year to 35,429 units, representing a 3.55% new vehicle sales market share for the month—the highest monthly share yet.

In September, the government announced a further £100 million funding for the scheme, expanding its coverage to up to 400,000 vehicles. Under the rules, the vehicle being traded in must be a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kilograms (kg), and be registered in the United Kingdom (UK) on or before 31 August 1999 (among other conditions).

Dingell, Congresswoman Betty Sutton, Congressman Jay Inslee, and Congressman Bart Stupak reached an agreement on a “Cash for Clunkers” scrappage program. Under the proposal, consumers may trade in their older vehicles and receive vouchers worth up to $4,500 to help pay for new, more fuel efficient cars and trucks.

The Cash For Clunkers program was highly successful at boosting sales of many different types of vehicles including hybrids. During the program, hybrid sales soared for both the month of July and August, but now without a Clunkers program around, sales have fallen off dramatically.
