Some manufacturers have focused on hybrids, others on electrics - but it is the clean diesels of Volkswagen that are reaping the rewards in the USA. Indeed clean diesel TDIs represented 81 per cent of SportWagon sales and 40 per cent of Jetta saloon car sales, which reached a total of 9,663 units.

Now are we still stuck maintaining our addiction with clean needles, or, best case, settling for methadone? Pioneering companies now have designs to turn gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles into all-electrics or plug-in hybrids, depending on how they’re built and the range their drivers need. Clearly, that hasn’t worked.
