It’s the car I drove this year that I most likely can see myself buying for, uh, myself. Honorable mentions: Toyota Supra manual, Toyota Prius, BMW 330i, Cadillac CT4 Blackwing, Kia EV6 GT, Chevrolet Trax Activ. Matt Posky Mazda3/CX-30: I was wrong to doubt Mazda going upmarket and vehicles like the Mazda3 and CX-30 are the proof.

But the Toyota is trying to come across as rugged and has retained some of the aggressive styling that we assume it’ll eventually abandon if the latest Prius and Camry are any indication. We’d recommend test driving both (and probably the Mazda CX-5 or CX-50) if you're considering buying either.

The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model. The plug-in Prius is expected to launch sometime in 2010.
